In India, social network operator Facebook has signed a contract with a renewable energy company. It is the first such treaty in the second-most populous country in the world.
Facebook will collect electricity from a wind farm located in the southern Indian state of Karnátaka. The wind farm has an installed capacity of 32 megawatts and belongs to the energy company CleanMax. Facebook is even supposed to work with the company to get more renewable energy into the grid.
CleanMax will continue to be the owner and operator of the wind farm, Facebook will collect electricity from the company, which will indicate the use of environmental certificates. About half of the project’s capacity is already in operation.
This is a typical model where Facebook becomes a long-term consumer of electricity from renewable sources at such companies. “This allows the project to pay for,” said Urvi Parekh, Facebook’s renewable energy manager. Facebook has similar contracts in other countries. From Southeast Asia, for example, it is Singapore, where Facebook supports a 160-megawatt project for solar power generation in this way.
