The head of the German Greens, Annalena Baerbock, who is a candidate for the next Federal Chancellor, is calling for the imposition of carbon tariffs on the import of goods from China into the European Union. Supposedly as compensation for so-called environmental dumping.
According to Baerbock, this should be an advantage that Chinese companies have because they do not have to meet such strict environmental requirements in production as European companies. “We have to stick to our standards when there is dumping in other regions,” Annalena Baerbock told Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
According to the head of the Greens and the candidate for the future Federal Chancellor, it is simply not possible to stand idly by, considering that Chinese companies do not have to meet such strict requirements for environmental friendliness. Thanks to this, they realize an advantage in the case of exporting their goods to the European or EU market.
Annalena Baerbocková also stated that compliance with environmental standards should also be taken into account in the case of tenders by government institutions. According to her, they should be acquired to a greater extent by companies that come up with modern technologies and thus reduce their dependence on Chinese suppliers.
