Chile’s new president, Gabriel Boric, went on an official visit to Argentina, where he met with his counterpart Alberto Fernandez. The heads of the two states discussed the strengthening of economic, cultural and also energy cooperation.
Energy cooperation established
“We are facing challenges that unite us,” Gabriel Boric said in a joint statement with Argentine President Fernandez. Borice was also accompanied on his trip to Argentina by Chilean Energy Minister Claudio Huepe Minoletti, who was in talks with Argentine Economy Minister Martin Guzman. Cabinet members of both countries signed a declaration on bilateral energy cooperation and commercialization of natural gas and oil.
Problems of the past
Ministers discussed the possibilities of exporting Argentine gas and oil to Chile, and the restoration of the Neuquen-Biobio pipeline could also be at stake. In the middle of the first decade of this century, Argentine gas exports to Chile were cut off, triggering a diplomatic crisis between the two countries. Exports resumed only in 2018, and Chile took more than $350 million worth of gas from Argentina at the end of January this year.
