Qatar will supply Germany with liquefied natural gas from 2026 for the next 15 years. Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck is satisfied with the agreement. Qatar will not be the only country from which Germany will source LNG.
Germany insists on its target
“Fifteen years is great. I would have nothing against a 20-year or longer contract,” Federal Economy Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) told reporters. But Habeck said Germany still stands by its goal of being carbon-neutral by 2045. This will require limiting gas consumption from the mid-30s of this century at the latest.
Gas supplies from Qatar
QatarEnergy, together with ConocoPhillips, will supply Germany with two million tons of liquefied natural gas per year. Deliveries are due to start in 2026. The gas will be directed by sea to the upcoming LNG terminal in Brunsbüttel, which lies at the mouth of the Elbe into the North Sea. “Germany will buy gas from countries that offer the most favorable conditions. Qatar is one of them, but not the only one,” Habeck said, without giving further details of the agreed contract.
