According to the Swedish prosecutor investigating last year’s Nord Stream pipeline explosions, the most likely scenario is that a “state-sponsored group” was behind the blasts. However, it is still “theoretically possible” that an independent group was responsible for the incident, Mats Ljungqvist added. He added that the type of explosive used in the attacks ruled out “a large number of players”, Reuters reported.
Who’s behind the unexplained explosions?
The Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines, through which Russia has sent and planned to send gas to Germany and on to Europe, were damaged by as yet unexplained explosions last September. At the time, no gas was flowing through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which Russia justified as necessary maintenance. Nord Stream 2 was completed, but has not been launched because of the war in Ukraine and anti-Russian sanctions.
There are several hypotheses
It is not yet clear who was behind the damage to the pipelines. The German authorities assume that the explosions were the result of sabotage, but do not know the perpetrators. Several possible hypotheses are still being investigated. Russia has described the incident as a terrorist attack and suggested that Western countries were behind it. The New York Times recently reported that a pro-Ukrainian group may have been behind the sabotage. Ukraine denies any involvement in the matter. Russia also doubts the credibility of this version, Kommersant newspaper wrote.
