While the end of the trade war between the United States and China has come to a halt, leading political figures in the United States have raised concerns that may negatively affect the nation’s economy in the near future.
For example, former presidential candidate and current Republican Senator Marco Rubio expressed on Twitter this week that “If President Trump has agreed to reverse recent sanctions against Huawei he has made a catastrophic mistake.” This comes after the Chinese telecommunications company has repeatedly been accused of stealing information from American companies.
Still, after the G20 summit in Japan this past weekend, Trump confirmed that U.S. businesses may continue to do business with the tech giant, despite credible and consistent warnings by leading experts.
Other American Senate members such as Democratic Minority leader Chuck Schumer ridiculed this move, stating how “If President Trump backs off, as it appears he is doing, it will dramatically undercut our ability to change China’s unfair trade practices.”
Trump’s reasoning ran along the lines that the United States technology was “highly scientific”, and therefore the only nation that could do business with Huawei, despite exclaiming that this move was a “personal favor” to Jinping.
Rubio threatened to act against the President that, due to Trump’s actions, the Senate will instead reimpose these restrictions through legislation.
Still, both Trump and Jingping attested that their meeting was highly successful and effective in its efforts to improve interactions between the United States and China.
