Electronics maker Foxconn to build Nvidia superchip assembly plant in Mexico

Chip

Taiwanese electronics maker Foxconn will build a factory in Mexico that will be the world’s largest plant for assembling Nvidia’s GB200 superchips into larger computing modules and systems. But Foxconn did not disclose further details. Chairman Liu Yong-way said only that the plant’s capacity will be huge. Reuters reported today.

Chips for AI

The GB200 chips are an important part of the next-generation Blackwell computing platform. Nvidia said in August that it had begun shipping samples of the platform to its partners and customers after tweaking the design. This is a combination of hardware and software that together enable the creation and processing of highly complex and demanding applications such as artificial intelligence (AI) models with trillions of parameters.

Foxconn is the largest contract electronics manufacturer in the world. It is best known as the largest manufacturer of iPhones for the US company Apple. The company is now capitalizing on the booming interest in artificial intelligence by assembling servers that are used to perform AI-related computational tasks.

Foxconn Extension

Foxconn already has a significant manufacturing presence in Mexico and has so far invested more than $500 million (£11.5 billion) in the Mexican state of Chihuahua.

Foxconn is looking to expand beyond manufacturing consumer electronics for Apple. It hopes to use its technological expertise to contract manufacture electric cars.

Last week, Foxconn reported that third-quarter sales rose 20.2 percent to a record 1.85 trillion Taiwan dollars ($1.32 trillion), helped by strong demand for AI servers.
