Representatives from Japan and the United Arab Emirates agreed on Thursday to cooperate in building the technology to produce hydrogen and establish the international supply chain of that commodity of the future.
Japan‘s industry ministry said for the Reuters agency that there had been a signing of a memorandum of cooperation between the two countries. The paper emphasises, among other things, that the common action on hydrogen technology responds to rising entusiasm in investments that go in this direction.
For Japan, as a traditional importer of energy raw materials, such cooperation can significantly facilitate the way behind its climate goals. The peak is to become a carbon-neutral country by 2050.
Japan could already import around three million tonnes of hydrogen a year by the end of this decade, which should rise to as much as 20 million tonnes by mid-century. Hydrogen could be produced in the UAE from greenhouse gas emissions, which would thus be captured in industry. Countries have also given themselves the goal of increasing hydrogen use in the United Arab Emirates itself.
