The Nord Stream 1 pipeline is due to relaunch on Thursday, July 21, after a planned shutdown ends due to regular maintenance. However, the European Union does not believe much in compliance with the deadline.
The resumption of gas supplies from Russia to the European Union through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline will occur as planned. Referring to well-acquainted sources, Reuters reported. However, gas will not yet flow at its full capacity, which stands at around 160 million cubic metres per day. “Gazrpom will resume its deliveries in volumes at pre-July 11 levels,” according to sources cited by Reuters.
Nord Stream plays an important role
The Nord Stream 1 pipeline supplies about a third of the total volume of gas that flows westward from Russia to the European Union. On July 11, a planned 10-day shutdown began due to regular maintenance that must be done on the pipeline.
But before that, the volume of the commodity delivered via Nord Stream 1 has fallen to about 40 per cent of its total capacity, raising fears in the leaders of the European 27 countries that the pipeline has risen to expiration of the shutdown deadline no longer triggers. In addition, Russia’s Gazprom told its German partners RWE and Uniper that it could not meet the agreed contract due to force majeure.
